Kabelleger Hoheweg

Hello,
I’m a French divers and maritime historian. While seeking for data regarding a former German auxiliary ship of the Kriegsmarine (and getting no success) I eventually discovered the amazing Oliver’s website www.sammelhafen.de where appears “my” ship.
BTW I also discovered these very small ships collectors. Very interesting! You’ve understood that I’m not specialized with waterline ships but rather passionate with maritime history. “My” ship was the former German Kabelleger Hoheweg (or Höheweg) and Oliver’s website is probably the only one to show her and confirm that she really existed as I still can’t succeed in finding her in Lloyd’s nor BV registers of ships. One can see the model at : http://www.sammelhafen.de/index.php?p=details&schiff=13100
Indeed Hoheweg model was manufactured by Welfia which probably knew more about her otherwise she would not have been able to build it. Perhaps it was a photo, perhaps more. It seems these models were sometime/often delivered with technical and historic data.
Anyway. I searched for Welfia and got no success. I read that this manufacturer (Winfried Bormann, alone?) stopped producing models.

Might someone be of some help and be so kind to help me in knowing more about this ship? Perhaps someone here holds this small model and the data delivered with it? This would be great.
I can read German.

Thanks a lot for availability and help

Christophe, Tours (France)

Hello Christophe!
In this moment, all I can give you ist, that the owner was "Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke". A manufacturer of undersea cables, based at city of Nordenham (near Bremerhaven). They had some more cable layer than the "Hoheweg". I believe one ship built after WW2 also had this name but maybe. I`m wrong. At the moment I´m not at home. If I find time, I will look what I can do for you.
Maybe an idea is also, send an E-Mail to them. This company is still present. http://www.nsw.com. Why not?
So long!

Hello Hinnerk,

Many thanks for your help. I've been advised to ask my request on an American forum and got several answers. It appears that the ship wasn't "Hoheweg" but "Howeweg".

Hello Christophe!
I`m very sure, that "Hoheweg" is the correct name. This owner has a tradition with cable layers carry that name. By the way, "Hoheweg" is a shallow in the mouth of river Weser wich flows near Nordenham, the seat of NSW. The Hoheweg bank ist marked with a beautyfull lighthouse (google Hoheweg!).
When I`m at home I will continue to search for more info.
So long!

Hello Hinnerk,

Many thanks. I've seen the famous lighthouse and I was wondering if 'Howeweg' would mean something or fit with a place. You've just answered.
Isn't Hoheweg also a district of Düsseldorf (but perhaps nothing in common) ?

BR,
Christophe
